Hey everyone! I hope you are doing well. I have not forgotten to do an analysis for “A Dance with Old Nick,” I know this story was posted in October along with all the flash fiction stories. I just did not have time to write this out.

This is a story laced with elements of folklore, personal trauma, and psychological tension from our protagonist. I remember hearing a similar tale when I was younger; that is where I drew inspiration for this irritation. The story unfolds in a casual, journal-like format, which creates an intimate connection between the narrator and the reader. Through this format, the protagonist gradually reveals a haunting experience that continues to disturb her years later. I tried mixing ordinary life with an encounter that feels otherworldly and sinister.

I wanted to add the supernatural elements of this story towards the end because I believe the story's shift from mundane reality to supernatural horror can be very unsettling. The devil’s handsome appearance, his flawless dance skills, and the eventual revelation of his animalistic features show classic depictions of demonic entities. I tried to make the sudden physical transformation—the rooster leg, goat leg, and serpent-like eyes—as vivid and terrifying as I could write it, reinforcing the notion that evil often disguises itself in appealing forms before revealing its true nature. The aftermath of the encounter, with the power outage, foul odor, and mysterious disappearance, enhances the story’s eerie atmosphere. The stench of sulfur is often associated with demonic entities. This ties the supernatural event back to the physical world, making it difficult for the protagonist to dismiss the experience as a mere hallucination or dream.

And, of course, there is the trauma after the event. The protagonist's trauma is evident in the way she avoids discussing the event for years. Her reluctance to open up about her experience highlights the isolation that often accompanies trauma. Even though others are curious and speculative, she feels misunderstood and alone, as no one can fully comprehend what she witnessed. The writing process and her journal serve as a form of therapy, a way to unburden herself from the weight of her secret. “A Dance with Old Nick” is a compelling tale that weaves supernatural horror and psychological tension together. Through the protagonist’s vivid retelling, the story explores themes of temptation, isolation, and fear of the unknown. The story’s use of religious imagery deepens its impact, turning a seemingly ordinary night into a chilling confrontation with evil. Thank you for reading and I do hope you enjoyed the story!
